| 4/2007 - MONEY MATTERS: ECONOMIC DIMENSIONS OF PEACE MEDIATION
|
| - Achim Wennmann |
This paper provides an overview of four economic dimensions of peace
mediation. Focusing on notions such as the "mediated state" and the
"commitment gap", it emphasises the role of economic considerations in
the implementation of peace processes. The Paper is part of an on-going
project, supported by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs,
that seeks to explore how the management of economic aspects in peace
processes can foster sustainable peace. ISBN 2-8288-0086-5 ISSN 1012-6457

| 3/2005 - WATER WARS OR WATER PEACE? RETHINKING THE NEXUS BETWEEN WATER SCARCITY AND ARMED CONFLICT
|
| - Philipp Stucki |
Over the past two decades, recurring predictions of water wars could be heard in the scientific discourse, in speeches of politicians and in the media. It is the aim of this Occasional Paper to give an overview of the debate about water wars versus water peace, and to furthermore show why the conflictual vision of water scarcity, although refuted in the scientific discourse, still dominates the mindsets of politicians and the wider public.

| 2/2004 - The Battalion State: Securitization and Nation-Building in Eritrea
|
| - Christian Bundegaard |
The main challenge facing the young Eritrean state has been to turn a hardened ideology of self-reliance and national unity derived from the independence struggle into economic development and participatory governance. This paper shows how the Eritrean leadership makes excessive use of this collective identity in a continued militarization of society and further involvement in conflicts in the African Horn region, prioritizing security before poverty reduction and democracy.
